Working Woodlands Project

The Working Woodlands project aims to protect, enhance and promote the woodlands of the Greensand Ridge for their biodiversity, heritage and recreational value, their role in the landscape, as providers of ecosystem services, and as part of the rural economy.

Main objectives of the project are to:

  • better understand our local woodlands, their importance, the challenges they face and possible solutions
  • raise awareness of the importance of our local woodlands and their management and encourage people to visit and enjoy them responsibly
  • promote the beneficial and sustainable management of our local woodlands
  • continue to develop the Working Woodlands Centre as a base for training, education and visiting Maulden Wood, and as a focus for woodland initiatives on the Greensand Ridge

**We have no workshops available to rent at present - if you are interested in one of our workshop units and would be liked to be placed on our waiting list please get in touch.**

The Working Woodlands Centre aims to support the positive management of our woodlands for the benefit of people and wildlife.  Key to doing this is supporting the local wood and woodland economy - we have three workshop units available to rent suitable for new and small wood- or woodland-related businesses on flexible monthly terms and at affordable rents.  They are ideal as a start-up unit, providing a first step from which to develop your business.

The workshop units are located in a single block in a barrier protected yard at the northern end of Maulden Wood, where limited parking is also available.

The location is convenient and central for the whole of Bedfordshire and surrounding areas, and is close to the A6 which runs between Luton and Bedford.

Two of the workshops, Ash and Maple, are 43m2 (5.4m x 8m) while Hazel is slightly smaller at 30m2.  All have a high ceiling (maximum height = 4m) allowing for the handling of longer lengths of timber.

The workshops have a shared toilet and washroom facility, and rent covers buildings insurance.  Services will be charged at a rate in line with usage.  Business Rates are payable to Central Bedfordshire Council, but discounts of up to 100% may be negotiated.

Each workshop has a roller-shutter entrance to allow vehicular access.
