Our story

The Greensand Trust is an independent environmental charity that works with local communities and landowners to conserve and enhance the distinctive landscape, wildlife and history of the Greensand Ridge and wider area, improving access, understanding and enjoyment for the benefit of everyone.

The Greensand Trust was established as a Registered Charity in 1999, having formerly operated as the Greensand Project since 1994.

The Greensand Project was created with the purpose of developing opportunities for greenspace at the western end of the Greensand Ridge, in particular, the restoration of the sand quarries and river/ canal corridors.  This identified the benefits conveyed by an approach which valued all aspects of the natural environment - landscape, heritage, wildlife and people. and sought to enable communities to get involved with their local environment for the benefit of all.

The Greensand Trust was therefore established as an independent charity, with its remit extended along the Greensand Ridge and into surrounding areas, to ensure this work was continued into the future.

Our charitable objectives as laid out at our foundation were:

  1. Promote, encourage and procure for the benefit of the public the improvement, protection and preservation of the countryside of the Greensand Ridge and the surrounding area and its towns and villages and the better development of the rural environment.
  2. To provide facilities for the recreation and other leisure time occupation of the public on the Greensand Ridge and surrounding area,  with the objective of improving their conditions of life
  3. To advance the education of the public
